Week 4 - Maria Marin

Image
I was on my way to class passing through the parking lot when I saw this. The sun was reflecting the cars and that formed those waves of light in the ceiling. It reminded me of auroras that formed in Alaska or in cold places. But most of the auroras are green and with blue color or purple. They have a variation of colors. I thought this could be a great idea to use for example in a play or in a different show like using a mirror and creating those reflecting waves of light and adding color to the lights to recreate the colors of the auroras.

Week 4, Diana Herrera

This week i decided to go for a more festive blog by turning my focus to a candle light. Every year i buy a scented candle according to the season to lighten up the holiday spirit. This month it is pumpkin spice. I love they way these candles warm up the mood in the room with the warm candle light flicker and the pleasing scent. I also find it appealing the way the warm light washes the surfaces of each object casting beautiful shadows. Notice the little elephant's shadow being spread on the surface of the shelf and the white dog being lit from the left. Since the dog it made of porcelain the light makes its surface shine.

I went to the Hollywood Cemetery for a movie night and when leaving this tomb that was lit caught my eye. I liked that because the door was green the white/yellow-ish lights had a greenish glow in certain areas. I thought about how this image could easily be a set created on stage. For the lights, 2 birdies would be needed and placed behind the columns and the rest of the stage would be completely dark. The birdies would probably be set at 60-70 instead of full so that they're not too bright. This could be the beginning of a scene and in the next cue if someone opened and stood in front of the door, a front light leko could be used to light the actor if need be. As I write this I also realize that birdies were probably used to light this tomb. I wish I was able to get more detail in the surrounding but I also like the dark and eeriness of the image and intensity of light.

Week 4 - Rafael

After dealing with 90+ degrees in August, we are finally seeing some overcast. The clouds in this photo are filtering sunlight passing through, leaving a very dull, grey wash over the city. The clouds act similarly to a color gel that we frame and place in a lighting instrument. In this photo there are also a few small gaps in between clouds that allow more sunlight to pass through. In viewing the clouds as a collective, the effect that is produced is similar to a gobo. Certain areas are shielding light. I chose this image because I have not often viewed overcast in this particular sense.

WEEK 4 - Misa

Image
One day after school, it caught my eyes. It is library at Cal State LA but the building looked so different in the evening. The lighting inside is spilling through the windows and creating a nice contrast with the sky. I just realize by looking at this picture for a long time, our library is an interesting architecture. The combination of the architecture and the lighting can make one thing looks like a different object. Plus, the evening time has a magical power to make most of the things look atmospheric. Those threes in the picture is also lit by the lighting from library and it looks mysterious.

Week 4- Jasmine

Image
This is my favorite blanket. It does not keep me warm and serves no purpose but to look nice on top of my bed.  In low light (the left, when my blinds are closed) it looks super soft. When the intensity of light is greater (the right, when I allow sun to light my room) the "fur" is more defined and the contrast between light and shadow is really beautiful. I love fabric and lighting together they can create such beautiful surroundings. Seeing where the light hits is equally as fascinating as where the shadows are cast by the different folds. You can create a different texture with the same fabric just by changing the lighting and that's pretty cool to me. 👌

Another day and another walk in Glendale. This time I crossed this little side street and stopped immediately. Usually I don't like the side streets in Los Angeles...they all kind of seem so dark and creepy and you don't really want to stop, but the lights in that side street created such a nice looking, european as well as chinese charme that I love (which ich weird because these two cultures are completely different...). They of course light up the street but because it's not just a street lamp which is always just lighting up one circle around itself, it seems invitingly and appealing. You can see how much the type of light that is used is can influence the atmosphere that is created. Even when they hanged up diagonally, they kind of direct you into the street. The lamps made this street looking bright and shining although it's just one of hundreds of side streets in Los Angeles.

Week 4- Guadalupe Reyes

When I got home I placed my notebook down under my lamp to remind me that I had to do homework. I totally forgot about it and left somewhere else. When I got home it was around 9pm so I turned on the lamp instead of the room light. As I was cleaning up a bit I  noticed that the ceiling was Yellow and I was like what is that. I had no idea what it was until I saw it was a yellow color and I traced it down to the notebook. The yellow on my notebook is a very rich one, it bounced off and onto the ceiling. On my other blog I said how red makes me feel like I'm in danger, but with this color it was almost normal. I think because as humans we are used to the brightness of the sun, so this was basically normal to me. My whole family was over as well and it was a very happy space, and I think yellow tied it up all together.

Week 4 - Carina

Took this picture Downtown, one night on my way home. I already noticed the building from far away while sitting in the bus and when I arrived nearby, I realized, that all people walking by can't help themselves but looking at it. For it was the only building lightened in color this night, it literally dragged the attention of everyone. The choice of color definitely contributes to it's eye-catching appearance, because although it's very pleasant to look at, a pink-ish, huge building wall is really the last thing you'd expect night's out in the streets of Downtown LA.

WEEK 2 - JESSE CHACON

Image
I took this photo when I was on the train heading to downtown from my home in Montclair. It was late in the evening and the sky was a warm yellow-orange and was casting shadows that I found very interesting. The cylinders on the left have light wrapping around them and are casting long shadows all the way to the right of the picture. The man is caught between shadows and his back is completely lit. The light wraps around the man as well. The shadow of the leaves on the big cylinder by the man is very interesting as well. On stage this could be recreated with side lights and a gobo.

Week 2- Jasmine

Image
I am in Ohio visiting my family and I am staying with one of my family members that has a house built in the early 1900s. We had just got done watching As Above So Below ( I recommend it) and it was time to go to bed. I am 1, not used houses having attics and basements which bumped up the creep factor and 2, not used to doors having actual key holes. I could not go to sleep because I was jet lagged. So while doing homework a light turned on outside my door. Spoiler alert, the source of light was just a hall lamp on a timer, not a demon. However, I took this picture because I liked the light filtering through the cracks in the door and the key hole. It was also fitting the creepy vibes I got from the old, historic type house and the movie (which was about people entering the gates of hell). With the help of the sound surrounding me (attic creaking, wind blowing outside) I was fully curious enough to open my door and find that lamp with the timer. So I'm kind of disappointed bec...

Week 2- Guadalupe Reyes

Image
During work I obviously need to use the restroom and the ones closest to where I usually am is in a small looking house. There's is like zero light in those restrooms and you always need to take your light or a flashlight to see inside there. This is the light we use to direct traffic. It always comes with me to the restroom, and it always makes me feel some type of way both scared and safe. The fact that it makes me feel safe is because I have some source of light lighting the restroom stall instead of having nothing and being pitch black. On the other hand it makes me feel scared because it's dark as it is already and the light being red makes it even scarier, when I see red I think of danger. This only shows me that color is so important, if it was just a normal light no color I would not feel scared at all. When I use the restroom I always hurry up to get out of there because those two emotions mixed together is weird to me.

Week 2 - Rafael Medina

Image
As I turned off the lobby lights at work, sunlight passed through one window and another, partially lighting a black chair. I wish I had a better camera lens on my mobile device that can handle the light glare a bit better. Oh well! Although the chair is not in the center of my photo, a strong case could be made that is object of attention. It's shadow is distorted. The front of the seat is absorbing light and the curvature of the padded seat can be noticed. I like this photo.   I feel like this photo can tell a hundred different stories.
