Week 4 - Rafael
After dealing with 90+ degrees in August, we are finally seeing some overcast.
The clouds in this photo are filtering sunlight passing through, leaving a very dull, grey wash over the city. The clouds act similarly to a color gel that we frame and place in a lighting instrument.
In this photo there are also a few small gaps in between clouds that allow more sunlight to pass through. In viewing the clouds as a collective, the effect that is produced is similar to a gobo. Certain areas are shielding light.
I chose this image because I have not often viewed overcast in this particular sense.
Lovely commentary! Overcast lighting is the HARDEST to reproduce well on stage. Without a clear sense of source our compositions are left feeling kinda hazy/muddy (much like an overcast day!) Really great notes on viewing the big picture, noting areas where more light is allowed to pass through...we also see the density of the clouds themselves, the clouds that are heavier/thicker are darker in color, not allowing light to highlight and reflect off of them as much as the whiter, puffier clouds. Nice!
