Site Specific- Jasmine
This year (much like every year before it) I had the pleasure of visiting Universal Haunt. Words to describe the park at this time: scary, creepy, gross and disturbing. To achieve these goals lighting was used sparingly yet very effectively.
This is a photo of the front of the park from a line. It is very dim and many of the lights being used are colored like the red you see at the top of the building. Much of the spooky seemed to be lit in red.
This picture is the space where people walk and near by is a seating area. There is just enough light to see figures yet there is no finding out whether or not the figures are monsters or friends before it is too late. This was probably my favorite part of the park because of the use of color. It isn't just red but blues and green as well and the added gobo made it more interesting.
These two pictures are pictures of what I saw while waiting in line for another maze called "Ash vs. Evil Dead". The outside was meant to be a traitor park and this was a dead tree in front of the trailer. These pictures display lighting being used as lightening. There was a thunder soundscape and every so often white lightening would flash which was really cool. I've seen this done before but was never aware or looking for the lights creating this effect.
ahahha really nice images chosen and wonderful commentary on all! I think one neat thing about the way the lighting company (Radiance) handles this Halloween design is that they have many on site designers, so each area of the park, though essentially plotted/designed by one person, is essentially split up between lots of individual designers, which gives each area a very unique feeling. They get to design their area how they see fit as long as they follow the main guidelines of the park. I love the texture and the backlight in that green color! And also, I'm a little biased with The Walking Dead since I was one of the designers on that attraction, but I LOVE that one (and the show). Love how immersive and how each little thing is themed and really thought through. Nice job!
