The Harry Potter section at universal studios sets out to
transfer you to the magical world of Diagon Alley. The overall theme the
designers wanted to create was a warm cozy world during a cold night. The warm
is found through the whole area from the amber lights that are hung out side
and from the inside of the stores. This warm amber is very dominate throughout
the area of the park but there are cool blues in this area as well. The roofs
of many of the shops and buildings are lit with blue to give the idea of a cold
night and possibly the moonlight shining down. In the overall look of this theres
a lot of warm amber leading up to a very blue and cold castle down the road.
Right when walking in, there is section with the 9 ¾ train
that is lit more bright then the rest of the area. Since it is the entrance it
makes sense to have a good amount of light still in beginnng. Its also more lit because the man standing in
front of it is interacting with his guest and has to been seen. More amber
light is here than anything else but you can see some blue on the roof. I believe
it was smart and successful to add more light to this section because its an
area that people definitely want to take pictures in front of and it’s the entrance,
so it would be nice to see where you are going at first.
As you travel down to you finally reach the castle, the blue
finally dominates the amber. The castle is lit from lights set on building roofs
across the way. The amber is still on the castle but is only in a small section
in center with blue consuming around the whole castle. Surrounded by very
little light at all, the mood changes as you go from the entrance to the end.
It was amazing to go from this for warm and lively beginning to a very dark and
mysterious end.
What the light designers were successful at was using cool and
warm colors at taking us from this real world, to the real wizarding world on a
cold moonlit night.
Fantastic! Really great job at taking us through the world with you! I really love this section of the park and think they did a great job at designing this attraction from start to finish. Really lovely contrast of warm and cool, very theatrical! It definitely transports you to a new place. Nice job!
