Site Specific - Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights - Carina

Since I'm totally into Halloween, it was absolutely sure, that I'm going to the Halloween Horror Nights at the Universal Studios, while I'm here in LA.
And so I did!
I was curious about, how they will change the mood of the whole park from normal mode to halloween land within just a little amount of time and I knew, they would do it primarily by changing the lighting.

When it finally got 7pm and the Horror Nights began, I definitely was not disappointed. The scenery changed completely by night.
The whole park was enlightened in the typical halloweenish combination of purple and orange lights and still every area had it's own little difference to it.

But there was this one area, that amazed me the most and gave my partly goosebumps, what was definitely due to the fantastic lighting design. ( and probably because I went to that maze all alone )

The moment I entered the entrance area of the The Walking Dead maze, I felt like I was actually in the hospital from the first season.
The lighting in there was perfect, it literally transferred me into that post-apocalyptic zombie world.
They just used simple, non colored ceiling lights for the main part to create the unconfortable hospital feeling, which added that special detail to the awesome built set.

I chose the picture above on purpose, because it shows the, in my opinion, absolutely successfull lighting design of this area.
While the front door is mainly lit with the cold, colorless ceiling lights, they used a rich orange and red light for the world behind this door. It almost felt like the gate to hell just opened and gave me a very intense and frightening feeling, since during the backlight, the bodies of the zombies just were silhouettes.

Absolutely amazing use of colors and angles.

  1. Awww so glad you liked it! Kelly and I worked hard on that attraction last summer! It was really fun to get to design a maze that was a little more permanent (and had a lot more money! :) Lighting definitely helps transform the park...and typically the park isn't even open at night, so it's fun to see everything lit up so differently. Nice!
