The Harry Potter section at universal studios sets out to transfer you to the magical world of Diagon Alley. The overall theme the designers wanted to create was a warm cozy world during a cold night. The warm is found through the whole area from the amber lights that are hung out side and from the inside of the stores. This warm amber is very dominate throughout the area of the park but there are cool blues in this area as well. The roofs of many of the shops and buildings are lit with blue to give the idea of a cold night and possibly the moonlight shining down. In the overall look of this theres a lot of warm amber leading up to a very blue and cold castle down the road. Right when walking in, there is section with the 9 ¾ train that is lit more bright then the rest of the area. Since it is the entrance it makes sense to have a good amount of light still in beginnng.   Its also more lit because the man standing in front of it is interacting with his guest and has to bee...

Site Specific - Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights - Carina

Since I'm totally into Halloween, it was absolutely sure, that I'm going to the Halloween Horror Nights at the Universal Studios, while I'm here in LA. And so I did! I was curious about, how they will change the mood of the whole park from normal mode to halloween land within just a little amount of time and I knew, they would do it primarily by changing the lighting. When it finally got 7pm and the Horror Nights began, I definitely was not disappointed. The scenery changed completely by night. The whole park was enlightened in the typical halloweenish combination of purple and orange lights and still every area had it's own little difference to it. But there was this one area, that amazed me the most and gave my partly goosebumps, what was definitely due to the fantastic lighting design. ( and probably because I went to that maze all alone ) The moment I entered the entrance area of the The Walking Dead maze, I felt like I was actually in...

I went to the Universal Studios to visit the Halloween Horror Nights. It was a great night with lots of fun and scary moments that were created with a great combination of sound, lighting and actors. An overall atmosphere was created by hazer and some small lighted spots on walls or spots with a fireplace and witches. I think designers used that to introduce the horror nights in calm way to slowly accustom the participants to the horror nights. I think the designers also wanted that the scale of being frightened can increase within the mazes and different areas. As I already been there for daytime, you could really tell the differences between the dream world of the universal studios and the horror world at nighttime. I was afraid that any moment someone would approach me from behind or from a hidden spot to scare me again. Usually I hate Halloween so I enjoyed the little lighted spots that looked for me really cute and not too scary (especially compared to the actual maze...

For my specific blog I decided to do Disney California Adventure. I had the experience to visited years ago ad it was during summer. There was not much lighting to see  and I was not paying attention to the lighting like I did this time. When I entered the park there was not much lighting to see until I got out of the park. I noticed that the lighting from the entrance of the park looked gloomy. Also the lighting of the entrance changed into different colors. For me instead of looking scary it looked fascinating.  When I went to California Adventure I entered cars land I felt like I was inside a movie and the lighting of the park looked bright and it was not scary a all. There was a lot of UV lighting and violets and pinks combined. Also everything was lighted up. There was not much of places that were not lighted. It was like entering to a fantasy world. Which is completely different from Halloween Horror nights. I did not wanted to risk myself in going pregnant b...

Week 14 - Jose

This is a picture of a lamp. I really liked how the lamp shade acted like a gobo. I was watching a scary movie called "As Above So Below" and it scared me. I am easily frightened.  The shapes it made look like a pair of eyes and give it a rather spooky look. I immediately turned off the lamp but then turned it back on for the picture.

For my site-specific blog, I chose to use Disneyland because I was too scared for Horror Nights. I got there really early so I had to wait till it got dark to really look at the lighting around the park, and not just the rides in the dark. I added a picture of the castle in the daytime as well and this still looked pretty but not as beautiful with the lights on. It was such a huge difference from day to night, and the vibe was also very different. For my overall picture, I chose Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, the castle that attracts so many eyes. I attracted my eyes because of how gorgeous it looked with all the lighting done to it. It had beautiful lavenders mixed with blues. I think the designer really succeeded in this because the bottom of the castle is darker and as it gets higher it gets brighter and more appealing. The castle also had icicles running down and this added to the wintry cold feeling. The icicles were almost pouring out of the peaks from the castle. The sky w...
